John stood on the seashore of the island of Patmos, gazing toward the cities across the water—cities with congregations of believers he knew and loved, churches where he had once taught the Word of God. In his old age, while in exile, he looked out longingly toward them. Suddenly, he heard a mighty voice—the voice of Jesus—calling him to write letters to the seven churches. In this book, we will hear how each of these letters was delivered to its intended church and what its message was.

Then the heavens were opened before John’s eyes, and he saw the throne of God and the heavenly host in all their splendor. In a vision, Jesus showed him what was to come: the terrible judgments that would fall upon sinful humanity, but also the glorious future awaiting the children of God. John went on to see a new heaven and a new earth. Finally, he beheld the New Jerusalem descending from heaven—the Holy City into which only those whose names are written in the Book of Life may enter.

John wrote down all that he saw and heard for the believers of every generation—including us. His words, so vividly described in the final book of Scripture, are presented here in summary for our readers.
