Commentary on Jonah and Zephaniah from Studies in the Minor Prophets series
Jonah and Zephaniah prophesied in different periods, but both books emphasize the importance of repentance. Jonah preceded Zephaniah. He was sent to prophesy to a foreign nation, calling the people of Nineveh to turn away from their wicked ways. The message intended for us in the Book of Jonah is not in the prophet’s words but in his actions, especially in God’s response to those actions.
Zephaniah prophesied in Judah. He addressed all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, warning “those who turn back from following the Lord” of the Day of the Lord’s wrath. At the same time, he prophesied destruction for the nations that reviled God’s people, including Nineveh, which felt secure. For Nineveh, he foresaw a desolate wilderness. Yet, God is also a God of mercy. He has intentions of grace toward His remnant among the people of Israel, and toward people from other nations that will join Israel.
Studies in the Twelve Prophets – A series of commentaries on the Twelve Minor Prophets of Israel, with applications for our days. The series is based on the premise that the message the prophets of Israel delivered in those ancient days has not lost its relevance or power. Even today, these words need to be heard by Israel and other nations. All listeners today must internalize them, absorb them, and make them an essential part of their thinking and way of life. The series is written in a fluent, easy-to-read, and accessible language.
