The story of Jonah the prophet is one of the most familiar tales in the Bible. This book invites us to journey with Jonah from beginning to end. We flee with him to the port of Jaffa, board the ship at his side, are tossed with him in the storm, and watch as he is cast into the sea—straight into the belly of the great fish. There, in the depths, he recognizes his sin and cries out to the Lord. We learn how Jonah’s three days inside the fish foreshadowed Jesus, and we meet him again on the shore as he sets out for Nineveh. Together with him, we walk the city’s streets, hear his warnings, and witness how the king and the people repent. We wait with him under the blazing sun to see Nineveh’s fate, sharing in his anger and disappointment at the city’s deliverance. And in the story of the plant, we discover with him the boundless grace and compassion of God.
Through this entire journey, the narrator helps us glean lessons from Jonah’s failure and bitter experience, opening our eyes to God’s providence in Jonah’s life and in our own—and to the central place of Jesus in God’s plan of salvation for all.
