This book is a guide to the principles of faith based on the Heidelberg Catechism, supplemented with explanations for children. The principles of faith are presented in the form of questions and answers, and the accompanying explanations are intended to assist parents and teachers who wish to teach these principles.
What is a catechism? A catechism is a guide to the fundamentals of faith. The Heidelberg Catechism was written many years ago by two professors, talented congregational leaders, Zacharias Ursinus and Caspar Olevianus, who taught people how to become leaders. They lived in Germany, in a city called Heidelberg, which is why the collection of questions and answers they developed is originally named after it.
The book is presented as a dialogue between two people. As you read it, you will see that one continually asks questions while the other provides answers.
There are one hundred twenty-nine questions and answers. The number of questions and answers varies from week to week. The last week is week 52, corresponding to the number of weeks in a year.
